So you might have realized the iPhone 3G is fairly popular lately, and especially now that it has received a price drop with the introduction of the iPhone 3G S. With this new introduction comes some new functionality, including the ability to take videos with the iPhone. But what we have here is my personal favorit top ten apps from the past and present before we move into the future on June 16, 2009:
1.Maps: The GPS live tracking functionality is indispensable when you are in unfamiliar territory. Tap it on, but make sure you have it plugged in to your car lighter socket when you are driving, or you may find a dead iPhone within a short time. Zoom, Satellite view, Search, directions, etc. all help you find what you want when you want it without having a dedicated device that may just cost the same as an iPhone.
2.New York Times: Stay up to date daily in your favorite categories. Not only that, but the “most emailed” sections can often clue you in to many subjects that you may not have known you would be interested in. Perfect chat for the water cooler, not to mention you can email each article and save it within the app. Never be at a loss for words again.
3.Google: This app is even better than the “real” thing. Voice search is the best on the planet, with instant recognition even better than your “Lexus navigator GPS”. The most complex words recognized and searched across the entire internet within seconds with the most relevant results? Yes please.
4.The App Store itself: Not a usual suspect, but only because it is inherent to the system itself. Check it often and you may be rewarded with the best in each category and pleasant surprises, often for free. PSN and Live take note, the organization within this app should be copied and added to your own functionality.
5.Lose It!: Getting older? It also means your metabolism is slowing down and you can no longer afford to eat whatever you want whenever you want, at least if you don't want to be a shut in or if you don't have a metabolism the equivalent of a hummingbird's. Lose It helps you keep within a caloric budget without being to demanding or complicated. All you have to do is put in the food you eat and it will let you know how many calories you have left before you blimp.
6.Dictionary: Dictionary.com's app made me put my Franklin pocket dictionary on the shelf for good. Not only does it have more words in it's dictionary, it also has more pronunciations, thesaurus entries, and recent entries stored. Add to this a Word of the Day function and more extensive word origin capability native to the app and I have all I need for my Engrish capabirities.
7.Days Until: Never forget again with this app. Type it in and move it to the next year easily when that date comes up. Custom alerts give you plenty of time to send that present and or note to your loved one. While the Calendar app works to, it just doesn't seem quite the same with a dedicated app for important dates in your life.
8.Kindle: If you have a Kindle like I do, but don't have the room for it wherever you go like I do, the Kindle app is a lifesaver in lines and places where you were not expecting to wait. It automatically syncs with the last place where you were reading on the Kindle and puts you right back to where you left off.
9.Classics: Want to catch up on those books that you were always told you should read but never got around to? Try this app for a presentation and bookshelf that makes these books feel and read important. The books are free, and the app is only 99 cents.
10. Audiobooks: Don't have time to read those classic books but do have a commute? Try the audiobooks for free thanks to the volunteers on Librivox.com. See, or rather listen, for yourself the difference between paying for professionally produced audiobooks and those that are available for free in the public domain. While some may disappoint, many others are just as good if not better.
Honorable Mention:
Stanza- The Gutenberg Project of the iPhone. Check it out if you want a wealth of culture and information at your fingertips.
Amazon.com- The World's Number One Retailer is the World's best place to shop for deals. Give it a try and you will never be at a loss for opportunities to save money. At the very least you can check prices in store and ask for a better deal with proof in hand.
Wikipanion – Have the information of the world in the palm of your hand. Just seconds to the most up to date encyclopedia in the world.
So what are your favorite top ten apps? What would you like for an app that you haven't seen yet?
