Now, I know this may sound silly, but isn't there a much more efficient tech out there that you can already use Facebook and Twitter on called a PC? Even a cell phone for Twitter? While I have tried Facebook and apparently didn't have the personality to tolerate it, I can only imagine the lengths to which Twitter would annoy me if I tried. I go to my game console for games, and though I appreciate Netflix and the DVD player for movies, I see these two features as utterly useless to me as a gamer with a laptop who likes the functionality of both but wants to keep them separate.
Hearing this announcement didn't wow me, though I can see the appeal for those whose personality types feed off of this type of technology. To them it's almost another game and another extension of their personality, and if it can fit into their gaming console, all the better. For others, they may just want to keep in touch with friends or family that may or may not have a 360/PS3. For myself at least, I think I will be appreciative of it being an option rather than a push technology. Then again, if they incorporated it right, utilizing features they have already mentioned such as screenshots and perhaps even videos of your gameplay in the future, could it be utilized as well as YouTube for certain gaming strategies or speed runs? Personally, Last.fm was more exciting as a feature, but these other well known social apps were probably no brainers to make Live more attractive.
Then again, PS3 has already had access to these features for a very long time for free. Though users cannot update facebook and need to go into the browser first just to tweet, they also have an internet browser and YouTube access from the XMB. Plus, how long will it be before Sony simply patches an update if they find it is incredibly popular having them integrated into the main menu with extra gaming functionality (if that ever happens).
Personally, I say as a gamer, stick with the game, but if added features are an option and do not interfere with that experience, let each individual decide on their own how he/she wants to tailor their experience.
Are Facebook and Twitter features that you want to use (or maybe already do) on your gaming console?
Do you see this becoming a hit with gamers?
